Childcare and kindergarten in Ocean Grove, Victoria

Headstart Ocean Grove offers long day care and a kindergarten program for children aged 6 weeks to 6 years, conveniently located for families in Ocean Grove, Marcus Hill, Wallington and Mannerim.

Outdoor spaces and garden

Children can explore large open play spaces with swings, climbing equipment, a natural sandpit and a cubby house. A worm and veggie garden gives children hands-on experience with growing food and caring for the environment. These spaces give children room to move, dig, climb and play outdoors every day.

Well-resourced indoor rooms

Indoors, well-resourced environments are set up to meet the needs and interests of children at every age and stage. The rooms give children opportunities for creative, sensory and play-based experiences throughout the day.

Long-standing educator team

Many educators at Headstart Ocean Grove have been with the centre for five to ten years, bringing consistency and familiar relationships to children and families. The team is passionate about early childhood and dedicated to each child’s individual development.

Individual Learning Plans

Individual Learning Plans are developed in partnership with families and used to guide learning around each child’s strengths, interests and goals. Educators draw on these plans to shape experiences that suit each child’s needs and stage of development.

Government-approved Kindergarten program

Our Government-approved Kindergarten program is delivered by a Bachelor-qualified Early Childhood Teacher and prepares children for the transition to school. Children build skills and confidence through play-based learning, routines, friendships and growing independence.

Sports and cultural programs

Children take part in the Little Sports Heroes program and Aboriginal cultural art classes throughout the year. These experiences give children opportunities for movement, creativity and connection to culture.

Community walks and local connections

Children enjoy community walks and local excursions including visits to the beach. Our centre also has a strong relationship with a neighbouring aged care facility, giving children meaningful opportunities to connect with their wider community.

Nutritious daily meals and app updates

Fresh meals are prepared daily by our on-site chef, with menus planned to give children energy for play, learning and rest across the day. Allergies and individual dietary requirements are catered for. Families can stay connected through our family app, with photos and updates about routines and learning experiences from the day.

“Every child has the right to feel safe, loved, and secure in their environment.”

I began my career in early learning in 2000 and joined the team at Headstart Ocean Grove in 2009. Over the years, I have worked as a Lead Educator, Assistant Centre Manager, and Centre Manager.

Working with children has always been my passion. Watching them grow into confident learners is a privilege. Every child has the right to feel safe, loved, and secure in their environment. Each child is unique, with their own personality, which makes this work so rewarding.

Early Childhood Education focuses on the holistic development of a child’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs, laying a solid foundation for lifelong learning and well-being. At Headstart Ocean Grove, we have an extraordinary team of passionate educators who truly make our centre the best place to be. Many of our team members have called Headstart Ocean Grove home for many years, a testament to the strong bonds we’ve built.

I believe it’s essential for educators to work in partnership with families to ensure each child reaches their full potential. We rely on regular communication to make families feel like they are a vital part of their children’s learning journey.

We look forward to welcoming you to Headstart Ocean Grove early education centre.

Our innovative early learning programs

Sustainability

At our Ocean Grove early education centre, sustainability is woven into daily activities, focusing on our veggie garden, worm farm, and comprehensive recycling program. We educate children on environmental awareness, teaching them the importance of water conservation and the impact of their actions on the planet.

Social and emotional learning

Children develop a strong sense of identity as they feel safe, secure and supported, building confidence, resilience and a positive sense of self. Through group activities, conversations and play, children learn to interact with others with care, empathy and respect, building positive relationships and friendships.

STEM

Educators introduce open-ended materials and invitations to explore, such as building, measuring and experimenting. Through shared conversations and investigation, children develop curiosity, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Music and movement

Our evidence-based Rhythm and Movement for Self-Regulation (RAMSR) program is designed to develop fundamental skills that help support children’s self-regulation, memory, and concentration. It is an innovative approach to holistic learning, development and well-being in early childhood.

See more I am sharing a heartwarming story that beautifully encapsulates the remarkable impact the team has on the children under your care. This past weekend, my son surprised us by proficiently using the keyword sign for 'more,' a sign that I hadn't introduced to him yet. This milestone is a testament to the dedication and expertise of Teika, Kaytlyn, Pat, Charlotte, and other educators who contribute to my sons growth. Their patience, nurturing guidance, and attention to detail, such as encouraging sign language to complement verbal communication, have not gone unnoticed. It is evident that my sons educators are deeply committed to understanding and meeting each child's unique needs. These small yet significant moments, like my son's newfound skill, fill our family with immense gratitude for the nurturing environment you cultivate. A heartfelt thanks to the educators who support my son daily. Your positive influence extends far beyond the classroom's walls, shaping brighter futures for our children. A side note, my son has attended 3 centres and I have a background as an early years educator, I can safely say this learning environment is second to none.

A centre tour is a convenient way to experience the childcare centre of your choice and meet with our qualified educators at a time that is suitable for your family’s schedule. Click here to book a tour online.

On the day of the tour, you can observe practices and interactions within the centre environment. You’ll be able to see all the rooms and playgrounds, ask the team members any questions you have in mind, and get all the information you need to make the best decision for your child.

Enrolling is simple, and our Family Support Team will guide you through each step.

First, find your local centre and book a tour so you can meet the team and explore the learning environment. If the centre is the right fit and a place is available, you’ll receive an enrolment offer for your child. If a place is not currently available in your child’s age group, we can add your child to the waitlist and keep you updated.

To finalise your enrolment, you’ll complete an online enrolment form through a secure link sent by our Family Support Team. You’ll also need to provide key details and documents, including your child’s birth certificate, Medicare details, immunisation history statement and, if eligible, your Child Care Subsidy details.

Before your child’s first day, you may be invited to attend a Stay and Play session. This gives your child time to explore the centre, meet their educators, and start feeling comfortable in their new environment. Once your paperwork is complete, your child is ready to start their early learning journey with us.

Read our step-by-step guide on how to enrol here.

Starting child care is a big milestone, and a little preparation can help your child feel more comfortable and confident.

Before your child’s first day, you can talk positively about their new centre, explain what their day might look like, and practise small routines such as packing their bag, saying goodbye, washing hands and sitting down for meals. You may also like to visit the centre with your child, meet their educators and ask our team about what to bring on the first day.

When your child starts, our educators will take the time to get to know your child’s routine, interests, comfort items and individual needs. Settling in looks different for every child, so we work closely with families to help children feel safe, supported and ready to learn.

Learn more about our Settling-in Program.

Most of our child care and early education centres offer nappies and wipes, sunscreen and hats, as well as nutritious meals prepared by our in-house cook. Some centres also provide sheets and formula, so you may not need to remember to pack them.

For nursery children, be sure to bring: nappy rash cream, dummies, bottles and teats, comfort toys or blankets, three spare outfits, spare socks and a plastic bag for wet clothes.

For toddlers and preschool or kindergarten-aged children, it’s best to bring: spare underwear, water bottle or sippy cup, sun hat, closed-toe shoes, two spare outfits, spare socks and a plastic bag for wet clothes.

Plus, anything else your individual child may need, such as breast milk, a sleeping bag, a comforter or medication.

It’s best to speak to your centre of choice for a full list of everything included.

Headstart uses Xplor Home as our family communication app. It is the best and easiest way to keep track of your child’s day.

After you enrol your child with the centre, you can utilise Xplor Home to book child care days, manage your account, receive the photographs that capture your child’s learning, learn about your child’s progress, as well as keep up-to-date with upcoming centre events and important information.

If your child shows signs of an infectious illness when they arrive at the centre or becomes sick during the day, you may be notified that you need to make alternative arrangements or pick up your child from the centre and keep them home until they are no longer infectious. While we understand that this can be inconvenient, Headstart is committed to maintaining a healthy environment and reducing the risk of infection for all children.

Under the Child Care Subsidy (CCS), families are allowed 42 absence days per child, per financial year. These can be taken for any reason, including public holidays and when children are sick, without requiring families to provide documentation.
